MLB: Tampa Bay Rays vs. Miami Marlins

James Shields allowed one run in 6 1/3 innings Sunday to win for the first time in his past five starts, and the Tampa Bay Rays completed a three-game sweep by beating the Miami Marlins 4-2 Sunday. The Rays outscored their intrastate rivals 22-7 and have won seven in a row against the Marlins. Miami fell to 0-6 on its homestand and has been outscored 43-10. Matt Joyce hit his 11th homer and Elliot Johnson hit his third to help the Rays (35-25) improve the best record in the American League. Shields (7-4), who had lost his past three decisions, allowed four hits and struck out five. Three relievers completed a seven-hitter. Fernando Rodney earned his 18th save in 19 chances with a scoreless ninth and lowered his ERA to 0.94.

MLB: Tampa Bay Rays vs. Boston Red Sox

Sean Rodriguez hit a two-run homer in the ninth inning off Boston closer Alfredo Aceves, and the Tampa Bay Rays rallied for a 4-3 victory over the Red Sox on Sunday afternoon, a day after losing in the final inning. Will Rhymes went 3 for 3 with three singles and an RBI for the Rays, who lost Saturday night on a pinch-hit, two-run homer by Jarrod Saltalamacchia in the ninth off closer Fernando Rodney. Clay Buchholz had his best start of the season and Adrian Gonzalez hit a three-run homer for Boston, which was about to move above .500 for the first time this season until Rodriguez hit a drive off Aceves (0-2) over the Green Monster with one out after Ben Zobrist walked.

MLB: New York Yankees vs. Tampa Bay Rays

Jeremy Hellickson came within one out of a three-hit shutout on his birthday and the Tampa Bay Rays beat the New York Yankees 3-0 Sunday to complete a season-opening sweep and match the best start in club history. Carlos Pena and Jeff Keppinger homered for Tampa Bay, which also started with three consecutive wins in 2002. The Yankees are 0-3 for the first time since 1998, when they went on to win 114 games and the World Series. Celebrating his 25th birthday, Hellickson (1-0) limited the Yankees to doubles by Nick Swisher, Mark Teixeira and Alex Rodriguez. The 2011 AL Rookie of the Year walked four, struck out four and was one out from his third career complete game and second shutout when he was replaced by Fernando Rodney.

Luke Scott had three hits and drove in three runs in his debut as Tampa Bay’s designated hitter, helping the Rays beat the New York Yankees 8-6 on Saturday night. The Yankees trimmed a six-run deficit to two in the ninth, even getting Alex Rodriguez to the plate as the potential tying run. But Fernando Rodney came out of the bullpen to retire A-Rod on a first-pitch grounder to a perfectly positioned second baseman playing on the left of second base.
